At least Real and Barça can count on the justice of their country.

The provincial court of Madrid, seized by the promoters of the Super League - of which the two Spanish giants are part, with Juventus - on Tuesday prohibited UEFA and Fifa from imposing sanctions against the latter.

According to the decision consulted by AFP, this court actually canceled a decision of another Madrid chamber, dating from April and which had opened the door to such sanctions.

The provincial court therefore prevents the European and world authorities from pronouncing sanctions against the partisan clubs of the Super League, this project of semi-closed competition which had almost caused European football to implode in 2021, before the European Court of Justice (CJUE ) decides on the merits of the case.

European football suspended following CJEU decision

The CJEU's Advocate General ruled in December that UEFA was within its rights when it threatened to sanction the clubs behind the scheme.

If the Court follows its conclusions, the implications for any new similar project would be potentially far-reaching: the participating teams could indeed be excluded from the national championships and their players could be refused to participate with their national team in the European championship or world Cup.

Launched in April 2021, the Super League collapsed in just 48 hours in the face of the fury of many supporters and the threat of political measures.

But the specter of a private tournament resurfaced in mid-October with the launch of a structure called A22 Sports Management, which claims to want to open “a dialogue” on the future of European club football by meeting each of its actors.
