When the superior world number one Iga Swiatek went out early in the tournament, few saw any Polish success.

Unseeded Linette knocked out former world number one Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic, in straight sets 6–3, 7–5, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night Swedish time.

- It's so emotional that I can't really believe it.

I tried to stay calm and take the chances I got, says Linette.

The 30-year-old Linette has never before made it past the third round of the Australian Open in her six previous attempts.

She is ranked 45th in the world.

Had lost seven of the last nine meetings

Before the meeting with Pliskova, she had lost seven of nine head-to-head meetings with the Czech.

In this year's Australian Open, she has also knocked out the French world number four Caroline Garcia.

Before, many people predicted that a Polish woman would win this year's tournament - top seeded Iga Swiatek.

But now, with four players left, there is only one other Polish woman left – Magda Linette.

For her, the semi-finals and the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka await, who defeated the Croatian Donna Vekic in straight sets, 6–3, 6–2.

The second semi-final will be played between Kazakhstan's Jelena Rybakina and Belarus' Victoria Azarenka on the night of Thursday Swedish time.
