Golf pro Matti Schmid finished in the top ten in a PGA tournament for the first time in his career.

The 25-year-old newcomer to the US tour finished the $8 million event in La Quinta, California, tied for sixth place.

With a total score of 265 strokes, the native of Regensburg was only four strokes behind the winner Jon Rahm (261).

Born in Munich, Stephan Jäger (271) finished the tournament in 36th place.

Schauffele manages an albatross

For Spain's golf star Rahm, it was the second win at his second start this year.

Two weeks ago he had won the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

In La Quinta, the 28-year-old prevailed against the Americans Davis Thompson (262) as well as Xander Schauffele and Chris Kirk (both 263).

Rahm received $1.44 million in prize money for his ninth win on the PGA Tour.

The Spaniard moved up to third place in the world rankings.

But Schauffele played the shot of the tournament.

The Tokyo Olympic champion managed a so-called albatross on the fifth fairway.

The 29-year-old Californian sank his ball on the almost 500-meter-long par 5 with the second shot from 206 meters in the hole.

An albatross is even rarer in golf than a hole-in-one.
