Jamahal Hill new light heavyweight champion at UFC 283 – Glover Teixeira steps down

At the end of 2021, Glover Teixeira became the second oldest champion in UFC history when he took home the light heavyweight belt at the age of 42.

After losing the belt in the following match, against Jiri Prochazka, he was given another chance to become champion when the now long-term injured Czech vacated the belt.

But Teixeira, today 43 years old, failed to defeat the twelve-year-younger Jamahal Hill despite the great support at home in Brazil.

Hill won a unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-44) after five rounds, but the American came close to ending the match several times.

Teixeira managed to stand on the podium until the end, but took a lot of beating and stated afterwards that he had been too tough for his own good.

"Glover is a true legend"

The match was his last after a 21-year career as an MMA professional.

- I can't do this anymore for the sake of my health, says Teixeira, who is now praised by the entire MMA world for his career.

The winner Jamahal Hill was surprised that Teixeira lasted the time.

- He is made of steel.

I don't see how anyone could resist those attacks.

It was an honor to share the cage with him, says "Sweet Dreams" who can now call himself UFC champion.

He was also awarded a bonus of over half a million kroner when the match was named the best of the gala.

- It feels surreal to be standing here today after the journey I have made.

Everything is possible through hard work, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

So many people have said I couldn't do this, that it was impossible.

In the gala's second title match, at flyweight, Mexican Brandon Moreno defeated rival Deiveson Figueiredo via technical knockout.

A doctor stopped the bout in the break between rounds three and four after taking a closer look at Figueiredo who had a cut near his eye.
