On December 14, a few days before the Christmas holidays, Mathias, a 17-year-old high school student from the Hautes-Pyrénées, was rushed to the Toulouse University Hospital after being tackled during a school meeting.

The young player, also licensed at Stade Bagnerais, is now quadriplegic.

This serious accident had led to the cessation of this practice of school rugby throughout the national territory.

While rugby V and XIII were able to resume a few days ago, rugby VII and XV, considered more risky, were still on stand-by.

This Friday, the National Union of School Sports (UNSS) indicated that players could put on their crampons.

Awareness measures

"Gathered at the initiative of the national management of the UNSS at the very beginning of January 2023, the national joint commissions devoted to rugby have worked to strengthen regulatory and safety educational measures.

All rugby practices can therefore be offered again, ”indicates the body.

At the same time, those responsible for school sport indicate that "additional awareness and prevention measures have been taken to guarantee the physical integrity of licensees, who benefit from insurance coverage in the event of exceptional risks for all sports practiced in sports associations and during competitions.

When the judgment was announced, the National Union of Physical Education, affiliated to the FSU, regretted this decision, accusing the authorities of sowing "thus the doubt on the professional skills of PE teachers and undermine trust placed in them by head teachers, parents and students".
