An Italian club returns a coach two days after his dismissal

Just two days after his dismissal, Davide Nicola returned today as coach of Salernitana, the sixteenth-ranked club in the Italian Football League.

On Monday, Salernitana announced the dismissal of Nicola, a day after the humiliating 8-2 loss against its host Atalanta in the eighteenth stage of “Serie A”.

The team failed to achieve victory in its last six matches, as it suffered four defeats in exchange for two draws, which led to its decline to sixteenth place, nine points away from the relegation zone.

Nicola said in a post on social media on Wednesday that he will remain coach of the team after consultations with the club's owner Danilo Erofolino on Tuesday, stressing, "I asked the president with all his might to reconsider his decision."

In contact with Agence France-Presse, the club confirmed the decision and that Nicolas will continue to work under the same contract that binds him to the club until 2024, which he signed last June after miraculously succeeding in keeping the team in the top flight at the end of last season.

Nicola, 49, arrived at Salernitana in February 2022, when the team was last in the league and on its way to relegation to Serie B.

But he managed to stay among the seniors in the last stage of last season, a point away from the relegation zone, after losing only one match out of the last eight and winning four.
