The good thing about the preliminary round of the Handball World Cup is that it allows you to enter the tournament in short steps.

Gradually dismantle the equipment to present it more finished to the main phase, which is where the work really begins.

For Spain, that progress culminated in

their most convincing performance

against Iran (22-35), a victory that also allowed them to advance with a full bag: first in the group and four points in their backpack.

Spain needed a game like that to get into the World Cup with both feet.

The victory against Chile, although comfortable, had left a bad taste in the mouth.

Especially to

Jordi Ribera

, who warned that the team had played a bad game and that although the rival was affordable, he had not marked the field on time and had allowed

The Wolves

climbed on his beards.

None of that happened again against the Asian team.

Iran is a curious case.

The two times that he has qualified for a World Cup, he has done so under the guidance of a Spanish coach.

In 2015 with Rafa Guijosa and in 2023 with Manolo Montoya.

But neither of them was still on the bench when the tournament arrived.

The Catalan's place is now occupied by the historic

Veselin Vujovic

, who has not infected the team with precisely that character with which he played.

Many errors were forced, but so many others by innocent.

After the trantran that was seen against Chile, an impetuous exit was expected, and Spain fulfilled its appointment.

Jordi Ribera's team dispatched

his best 30 minutes so far in the tournament

in the first half, an acceleration that left the game over before the break.

Los Hispanos

defused Iran's attack with a 5-1 defense that caught the Asian team off guard at best, helpless at worst.

The intensity behind the Spanish team, with Kauldi Odriozola as the spearhead, led to numerous recoveries and errors from the Iranian attack, opportunities to go on the run and nurture a happy score on the counterattack.

But perhaps a better sign than this superiority against a lesser team, was that the team did not lower the piston even with the score resolved.

Spain kept biting back until the final minutes

and, when Iran passed the entanglement, he met Pérez de Vargas, MVP of the match.

A placid game to gain confidence after the flaccid victory against Chile and continue spreading sensations.

Pol Valera,

substitute for the injured

Ian Tarrafeta

, had a comfortable entry into the tournament.

And

Alex Dujshebaev

, dosed in the first duels, finished as the team's top scorer with six goals, the same as

Ferrán Solé

.

After completing the preliminary round process with plenty of victories, on Wednesday the real World Cup begins for Spain with the main phase, the three games that will really measure how far Jordi Ribera's team can look.

The team will open fire against the hosts, Poland, who beat Saudi Arabia with some trouble;

on Friday they will play against Slovenia and on Sunday, big game: the Olympic champion, France.
