• James Vowles, former chief strategy officer at Mercedes, becomes Williams boss.

  • He replaces Jost Capito, whose departure, as well as that of technical director François-Xavier Demaison, was announced at the end of 2022.

Little surprise in the world of Formula 1, the Briton James Vowles, former director of strategy at Mercedes, will lead the Williams team in replacement of the German Jost Capito.

This announcement was made by the team this Friday, via a press release.

Engaged in F1 for 21 years, Vowles, 43, began his career with British American Racing, which became Honda Racing then Brawn GP - which won the double title in 2009 for drivers (with Jenson Button) and constructors - before moving to be acquired by Mercedes.

“We part on excellent terms”

“Mercedes have been a huge support to me on my journey, and we are parting on excellent terms after more than 20 years of working in Brackley, UK, where Mercedes, eight-time F1 world champion at builders, said the Briton.

“James has been a highly valued member of our team as director of motorsport strategy, playing a vital role in our success over the past few years,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff also reacted.

Now expected at Williams from February 20, Volwes said he was "eager to start" with his new team powered by Mercedes and its two drivers, the Thai Alexander Albon and the American Logan Sargeant, who replaces the Canadian Nicholas Latifi.

He succeeds Jost Capito, whose departure from management was announced at the end of 2022, at the same time as that of technical director François-Xavier Demaison, whose replacement has not been announced.

“As we continue our relentless pursuit of results, we believe James' appointment will reinforce our commitment to strong, experienced and strong leadership,” said Matthew Savage, Chairman of Dorilton Capital.
