According to the organizers, it was a tourist who died.
"An Italian tourist was standing behind a dune when the accident happened," they write.
The spectator was evacuated by helicopter but died during transport to hospital.
It is not the first time that the Dakar Rally has claimed a fatality.
Since 1979, at least 76 people have died, both competitors and spectators.
