A World Cup gold with Argentina can be assumed to be a big part of why Lionel Messi, 35, has been named the world's best male athlete in 2022. The award comes from the international sports journalism organization AIPS, where 420 journalists worldwide have been allowed to vote.

Messi was superior in the poll with over a quarter of the votes.

But after him, second on the list with almost ten percent of the votes, is Armand Duplantis.

During 2022, the Swede won WC gold, EC gold and extended his previous world records both outdoors and indoors.
