Swedish men's golf has been struggling for a while now.

Ludvig Åberg is the great hope for the future.

The 23-year-old from Eslöv is ranked as the world's best amateur golfer and number one in college in the USA.

- Being number one is fun.

After all, there is little difference to being second, laughs Åberg, who is at home in a cold Skåne - far from the heat in Texas where he dominated college golf with his Texas Tech.

"Keep track of my own emotions"

Despite victories and top ranking, Åberg is still clearly not the best at anything in the game itself.

The strength lies in the mental.

- I have a little more control over my own emotions and can handle them much better than many others.

I can see a lot of people who get very angry and don't really let it go but stay angry throughout the round and throw punches just because you have these feelings inside.

Åberg has learned to master the difficult art of taking one shot at a time – forgetting mistakes and refocusing.

- I have so much experience and statistics that I am good.

Why wouldn't I trust it then?

If I make a triple (bogey) at the beginning, there are 17 more holes so you can make 17 birdies, as it were, says Åberg.

Will win at PGA "within one to two years"

Under new rules for this year, the first place in the college rankings in May gets a direct spot on the PGA Tour.

If all goes well, Åberg will play on the world's best tour already in June.

When will you win your first PGA tour event?

- Within one to two years, says Åberg with quite a bit of certainty in his voice.

Turned down LIFE

But it could have been something completely different.

Last spring, Åberg was offered nearly 26 million kroner to sign a two-year contract with the controversial Saudi-backed LIV tour.

He declined.

- In 5 years or 10 years, I don't want to look back on this and regret it.

In my head, it (the LIV tour) is not really the right way to compete and play.

Åberg makes his annual debut when he gets the chance in the major competition on the DP World Tour in the Dubai Desert Classic 26–29 January.

He got that place for the first place in the ranking in the college.
