The Iraqi Football Federation announced on Saturday the start of ticket sales for the 25th edition of the Gulf Cup.

This is the first regional football competition organized in more than four decades in the country.

Bringing together the eight Arab countries of the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, the 25th edition of the Gulf Cup will be held from January 6 to 19 in Basra, a major city in the south of Iraq, with two brand new stadiums.

After decades of devastating conflicts and a still fragile security situation, the event represents a major challenge for the Iraqi authorities.

No visa fees for supporters

The Federation has shared on its Facebook account the website dedicated to the purchase of tickets, the prices of which vary from 10 to 30 dollars, depending on the category of seats, and allow to attend two matches.

In mid-December, the Iraqi authorities announced the waiving of visa fees for fans attending the competition, hoping to attract football fans from the Gulf countries, in particular from neighboring Kuwait, whose border is only fifty kilometers from Basra.

The city has two stadiums, the first with a capacity of 65,000 seats and the second with 30,000 seats, which will be inaugurated on Monday, with a friendly match between an Iraqi team and a team from Kuwait.

Iraq has been deprived of international meetings for many years due to instability and repeated conflicts.

In early 2022, Baghdad hosted a friendly match between the country's national team and Uganda.

It was the first international meeting organized in the Iraqi capital since the reception of Liberia in 2013, according to FIFA.
