It was in connection with the Super Cup match in basketball in Egypt between the Cairo team Al-Ahly and the Alexandria team Ittihad on Saturday that a stand collapsed and 27 people were injured.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health states according to AP that at least 27 people were taken to hospital, most with broken bones.

It was when it became restless among the Ittihad fans that the stands gave way.

Located in the 6th of October district in Cairo and holding 5,000 spectators, the arena was inaugurated three years ago and was built to be one of the venues at the Handball World Cup in January 2021.

It is called the Dr Hassan Moustafa Hall and is named after the president of the International Handball Federation.

The Egyptian has reached the age of 78.

He gave a very confused speech in connection with the final of the Women's World Cup in Spain in December 2021, where Norway beat France in a dramatic final.

Sweden's men played all their matches in the Kariostadion, the largest of the 17,000 capacity halls used at the World Cup.

Due to the pandemic, there was no audience at the Handball World Cup in Egypt 2021.

Crowd tragedies have marred Egyptian sports.

In 2012, more than 70 people were trampled to death during a football match in Port Said.

In 2015, 22 people died in the chaos after police fired tear gas at soccer fans in Cairo.
