Sheffield, December 26, 1860. The players run on a muddy field after a ball that is an enemy: a pig's bladder wrapped in leather sewn by a tough cord that sticks out from the outside.

It has a circumference of 70 centimeters and weighs 400 grams, but when in contact with water it becomes very heavy, controlling it is torture.

Pushing and tripping to get the ball between two posts joined, for the first time, by a wooden crossbar.

Until then, a rope marked the height of the goal.

On Boxing Day,

Hallam Football Club

and

Sheffield Football Club

mark a milestone by playing the first ever football match.

The match, which ended 0-2, takes place at Sandygate Road, a 700-capacity cricket ground owned by Hallam FC.

Until December 26, 1860, only matches were played between the singles and the married of the Sheffield team, the father of all the most popular sport clubs on the planet.

The Sheffield Football Club was born in 1957, when students

Nathaniel Creswick

and

William Perst

, cricketers, created a football team with the intention of exercising and staying in good shape during the winter months, when cricket rests.

These two students from Harrow School in London seek the endorsement of the most influential citizens of Sheffield and on October 24, 1957 they sign the birth certificate of the pioneer club.

Since there is no opponent to face, the members of the squad are divided according to marital status and the types of professions to play against each other.

Two years later, in 1859, Creswick and Prest designed the

Sheffield Rules

, the first regulation in the history of football.

So there was no offside, the players could touch the ball with their hands and be pushed by their opponents.

Current Australian rules football is based on these rules.

The love for soccer grows among the population of the county of Yorkshire, in the north of England.

And in 1860 Hallam FC was founded, based in a suburb of Sheffield.

The Hallam also comes from a cricket group.

Its

stadium is Sandygate Road

, built in 1804, which holds the honor of hosting the first derby in football history.

Shortly after Boxing Day 1860,

John Charles Shaw

, founder and captain of Hallam, becomes president of the Sheffield Football Association, which organizes matches at the local level.

Shaw also works with

Sheffield captain

Charles Alcock to create the Football Association and draw up the current rules of the game.

In 1867, Hallam wins the Youdan Cup, considered the first oldest football competition in the world.

At present, Hallam is an 'amateur' club that plays in the regional league.

Sheffield plays in the

Northern Premier League

, a tournament in the Eighth Division.

They are the precursors of

'Boxing Day'

, released in 1880, with the Preston North-West Bromwich and Bolton Wanderers-Derby County clashes.

On December 26 of that year, that traditional league day was born that monopolized the spotlights around the world the day after Christmas.

This year's Boxing Day is special because it opens the first day of league competitions in Europe after the six-week break caused by the

World Cup in Qatar

.

Matchday 16 of the Premier takes place tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Spanish League returns next Thursday, 49 days after the break generated by the Qatari tournament.

France and Portugal

recover the routine on the 28th. Italy returns on January 4;

Holland, on the 6th, and Germany, on the 20th.
