Chelsea appoints German Weville as its new technical director

The German Christopher Pfefel has been appointed as the new coach of Chelsea, to replace the Czech Petr Cech, according to what the English club announced today.

The 36-year-old previously worked in Salzburg, where he supervised the signing of the Norwegian Erling Haaland, the current Manchester City star, and recently with Leipzig in Germany, where he was responsible for contracts and scouts for all age groups.

"Chelsea are building the most exciting project in world football and I am incredibly proud to be joining the club," said Fiville. "There is a lot of potential for the club to continue to succeed, develop and grow."

Pfeiffel fills the void left by the departure of Chuck, the former Chelsea goalkeeper, in the summer after three years in office, after the acquisition of the London club by a consortium led by American Todd Boyle.

"Under the new ownership, (coach) Graham Potter and the whole team, there is a clear and sustainable philosophy based on performance analysis, data and innovation, and I look forward to playing a part in that," said Pfeiffel.

Boyle said Pfeiffel would support Potter in an "important leadership role for the club", adding "his work in Germany and Austria speaks for itself".

Chelsea currently occupies eighth place in the league, eight points behind fourth place, but it reached the last eight in the Champions League, where it will face Borussia Dortmund.
