League leaders Melbourne City led the match 1–0 as Melbourne Victory supporters stormed the pitch.

Referee Alexander King stopped the match immediately, on the grounds that the players' safety could not be guaranteed.

Both teams' supporters had threatened before the game to walk onto the pitch as a protest against the A-League finals being moved to Sydney for the next three years.

Football Association Australia has commented on the scenes:

“This kind of behavior has no place in Australian rules football.

A full investigation will begin immediately, where strong sanctions will be handed out," the statement reads.
