The World Cup continues to offer exciting play-off matches, and the quarter-final between powerhouses France and England was no exception.

An unlikely penalty miss decided the decision.

With just over a quarter of an hour played in the match, Aurélien Tchouaméni was caught outside the penalty area.

From a standing position, the young midfielder gave France the lead with a shot from 25.9 meters away.

The ball found its way into the top corner behind Jordan Pickford.

The goal was followed by a period with few chances, and it was only at the beginning of the second half that the match really took off.

In the 52nd minute, Bukayo Saka was brought down by the goalscorer Tchouaméni and the referee blew for a penalty.

From eleven meters there was no doubt for captain Harry Kane who equalized at 1-1.

In the 77th minute, Olivier Giroud created France's best chance of the second half when he volleyed home from close range, but Pickford made a smart save.

However, it didn't take more than a few seconds before the next post came from Antoine Griezmann.

Giroud, who earlier in the tournament became France's top scorer ever, was there and headed in 2–1.

Third miss in the national team

However, England would get the chance to equalize from the penalty spot again, after Theo Hernandez brought down substitute Mason Mount.

Then Harry Kane stepped forward, having taken 58 of 68 penalties throughout his career, according to Transfermarkt.

As with the first penalty, Kane went for power...this time, however, the ball flew well over the bar and France's lead remained.

Kane's miss was only his third in the national team.

The last thing that happened was that England were awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area, similar to the one the Netherlands got against Argentina.

Marcus Rashford's attempt was not bad, but France held out against England's pressure for the extra ten minutes and now awaits the semi-final against the scrappy team Morocco.
