The German women's hockey team won the title at a European indoor championship for the 16th time.

National coach Valentin Altenburg's team beat the Netherlands 5-4 (1-2) in the final in Hamburg on Saturday.

The goals for the record European champions were scored by Pia Maertens (3) and Lisa Altenburg (2), who had previously missed a seven-meter throw.

The Dutch women were the expected tough opponents.

The Altenburg team trailed 1-0 and 2-1 before Maertens in particular set the tone and led Germany to victory.

Third place went to the Ukrainians after a 1-0 (0-0) win over Austria.

Fifth was the Czech Republic, which defeated Turkey 5-0 (2-0).
