The dream of a sixth World Cup title has burst again early for record champion Brazil.

Superstar Neymar's team lost 4-2 on penalties against World Cup runners-up Croatia on Friday and were eliminated in the quarter-finals for the fourth time in the last five World Cup tournaments.

After 120 minutes it was 1-1.

Brazil's Rodrygo and Marquinhos missed from the penalty spot in front of a crowd of 43,893 in Al-Rajjan.

Superstar Neymar (105+1) scored the Brazilian goal in extra time, Bruno Petkovic equalized (117th).

The Croatians, who have been so harmless in the tournament so far, can dream of a repeat of 2018.

In the semifinals, Luka Modric and Co. meet Argentina with superstar Lionel Messi or the Netherlands on Tuesday (8:00 p.m. CET in the FAZ live ticker for the World Cup and on MagentaTV).
