When Marquinhos smashed his penalty into the left post, the national trauma was a fact.

Croatian joy mixed with Brazilian tears.

It was so close.

- Brazil have themselves to blame.

You can't get into such a situation as you do when there are three minutes left and give Croatia the chance, says SVT Sports expert Markus Johannesson.

With Brazil guarding their 1-0 lead, Croatia equalized to make it 1-1.

Just three minutes remained in extra time when the samba party at the Education City Stadium was muted and turned into a nervous wait.

Mislav Oršic played the ball in for Bruno Petkovic to make it 1-1 after a touch on Marquinhos as the team went into quick transition and the Croatian fans could hardly believe their eyes.

It was Croatia's only shot on goal in the entire match.

Croatia equalizes late

In added time of the first quarter of extra time, Neymar broke through from a wall play, rounded goalkeeper Livakovic and thumped the ball into the roof of the net to score his 77th international goal for 1-0, equaling icon Pelé's record.

82-year-old Pelé, the only player with three World Cup titles, has previously said he watched Brazil's World Cup matches from his sickbed in a hospital in Sao Paulo where he is currently being treated.

Shortly before, Croatia had a good chance but substitute Bruno Petkovic shot over.

Brazil had the most and best scoring chances in regular time but could not prevent it going to extra time.

Midway through the second half, Lucas Paquetá broke free with Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic coming out quickly to make the save.

At the start of the second half, Brazil created a couple of hot chances where VAR was called in to rule out a possible penalty but another VAR check for offside went ahead and 0-0 remained.
