According to the Washington Post, two-time Olympic champion Brittney Griner will land in San Antonio, Texas, where she will undergo health checks at a hospital and be reunited with her family.

Biden on Thursday thanked the officials who worked on the case as well as the United Arab Emirates, which acted as an intermediary in the prisoner exchange.

The fact that Griner was released on Thursday, after almost ten months in Russian custody, could only happen when the United States simultaneously released arms dealer Viktor But, who goes by the nickname "Merchant of Death."

But was convicted in 2011 in a US court of having planned to sell weapons to the Farc guerrillas in Colombia, and is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in Illinois, USA.

- This is a day that we have been working towards for a long time, said Biden.

But arrived in Moscow late Thursday, Russian state-backed news media reported.

In a clip shared by Russian media, Griner and But are seen passing each other on the runway at an airport in the United Arab Emirates.

There is also a film clip of Griner on board an airplane where you hear her say that she is happy, but that she does not know where she is going.

There are also pictures of Bout being embraced by his wife and mother upon arrival in Mosvka.

The US hoped that another imprisoned American would also be included in the exchange.

But Paul Whelan, who was arrested in 2018 and two years later was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Russia for espionage, remains in custody.

In a phone interview with CNN from the remote penal colony where he is being held, Whelan said he was very disappointed that the Biden administration had not done more to secure his release.
