Qatari official: The death of a worker in a training stadium in the World Cup

Qatari officials said today, Thursday, that Qatar has opened an investigation into occupational safety, after reports were received of the death of a Filipino worker in a training stadium during the 2022 World Cup, which is currently being held.

The CEO of the World Cup, Nasser Al-Khater, confirmed to Reuters the death of the worker, without providing further details.

Al-Khater offered condolences to the family of the deceased worker, and said, "Death is a natural part of life."

"If the investigation concludes that safety protocols were not followed, the company will be subject to legal measures and deterrent financial penalties," another Qatari government official said in a statement to Reuters.

"The rate of work-related accidents has started to decrease significantly in Qatar since the implementation of strict health and safety standards and the emphasis on their enforcement," the official said.
