The WC's third round of 16 was decided between reigning champions France and Poland.
This after the former won their group, while Poland came second behind Argentina in theirs.
France controlled much of the game in the first half.
But the first really big chance, or chances, came from Poland.
It was Piotr Zielinski who came to the first end, and the ball was stopped by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Zielinski pounced on the rebound, which was also stopped before Matty Cash went for the third down of the sequence.
Then Raphael Varane was in front and stopped the ball on the goal line.
Instead, it was France who took the lead just before the break.
Played in by Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud was able to put in 1-0.
It was his 52nd national team goal, which makes him the most goalscorer in the French national team, as he overtook Thierry Henry.
Mbappé behind all three goals
In the second half, Giroud had a second ball in the net, but the referee had blown off a Polish free kick in the sequence before.
The Frenchman struck with a bicycle kick, but thus without payoff.
2-0 for France still followed, however, on a counterattack.
Ousmane Dembélé laid the ball sideways to Mbappé, who got himself into the penalty area and finished in front of the cross.
With the clock just past 90 minutes, Mbappé added, from a similar position to the previous goal.
This time, however, he chose to place the ball in the far corner with a distinct shot.
It is the Frenchman's fifth goal in the championship and his ninth in the World Cup context, which is as many as Lionel Messi.
In stoppage time, Poland were awarded a penalty for handball, and Hugo Lloris took the effort from Robert Lewandowski.
But French players were inside the penalty area and the Pole had to convert.
Then he got a hole on Lloris and when the Frenchman went to the right of the goal, the ball could be rolled into the open half.
However, the goal made no difference to the outcome, as France won 3-1.
France is through to the quarter-finals, while Poland has to thank.
France will next face the winner of the match between England and Senegal.
