England international Raheem Sterling left the World Cup in Qatar for personal reasons.

This was reported by Gareth Southgate on Sunday after the 3-0 win in the round of 16 against Senegal: "He's on his way home, back to England".

The English national football team had to do without Sterling in the World Cup Round of 16 against Senegal.

The 27-year-old Chelsea striker was out "because of a family matter," the English FA announced a good hour before kick-off.

As the BBC reported after the game, Sterling's home in London was broken into while his family was present.

The perpetrators were believed to be armed.

"He'll take care of the matter and then we'll see," England manager Gareth Southgate told ITV before the game.

Sterling had started England's first two group games against Iran (6-2) and the USA (0-0).

For the third game against Wales (3-0) Phil Foden took his place, who is also in the starting line-up against Senegal.

Whether the Chelsea attacker can intervene again during the tournament, which continues for England on Saturday (8 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the World Cup and on MagentaTV) in the quarter-finals against world champions France, is open.

Southgate "didn't want to go into too much detail" but stressed: "We have to give him time to work this out and be there for his family.

That is what matters most now.”
