Halfway into the game, the Minnesota Wild took an iron grip on the game as they first scored three goals in just under three minutes to take a 4–1 lead.

When then Joel Eriksson Ek made it 5-1 only 29 seconds into the third period, the match felt more or less decided.

But Dallas never gave up.

Finland's Roope Hintz reduced seven minutes into the third and young superstar Jason Robertson added 38 seconds later with a delicious move around the keeper for 5-3.

With a home crowd rekindled by hope, another Mason Marchment reduction came from just the pace with ten minutes to play.

With just under two minutes remaining, Roope Hintz also equalized with his third goal of the game, whereupon the crowd exploded and threw their headgear onto the ice in tribute to the Finn.

The hat-trick scorer missed the penalty

5-5 and overtime.

Both teams had sharp chances but there was no decisive goal, instead a penalty shoot-out awaited.

Once there, both teams' stars showed high class and scored each team's first two penalties.

In the third and decisive round, it was Roope Hintz's turn and he appeared to score after tricking goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury to the ground.

But he came very wide and from a tight angle he could only slide the puck along the goal line and past the goal.

Instead, Minnesota's Frederick Gaudreau decided in the following penalty after a draw and backhand finish in the roof of the net.

Despite the defeat, many Dallas supporters probably left the arena happy after the pick-up and the saved point.
