The Iraqi national team succeeded in leading the second group in the Asian qualifiers for the World Cup, after defeating Qatar and Jordan, collecting six points, which it won by winning three matches and losing in one match. , and settles the qualification card for the World Cup in Mexico 1986, thus becoming the first team to reach the World Cup without playing any match at home, and in front of its audience, which was limited to residents and the Arab public in the host countries.

During its participation in the group stage in the World Cup in Mexico, Iraq lost its first match with Mexico, with a clean goal, and in the second it lost to Belgium 1-2, while it lost its third match against Paraguay with a clean goal, scoring one goal for the player Ahmed Radi, without getting any points. .
