Mexican boxer Alvarez backs down from Messi's threat...and courtesy of the Argentine fans

Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez apologized for threatening Lionel Messi after he felt insulted by a video clip in which the Argentine star appeared to remove his foot from the Mexican national team's shirt in the dressing room after winning a match between the two teams in the FIFA World Cup.

Messi, 35, who is participating in the World Cup for the fifth time, scored in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Mexico last Saturday in the second round of the group stage, after Argentina's unexpected defeat in the first round against Saudi Arabia.

Alvarez, who has 2.2 million followers on Twitter, wrote in a tweet, commenting on the video clip, "He (Messi) should pray to God not to catch him."

But Alvarez wrote on Wednesday that he had been carried away by his comments and apologized to Messi and the Argentine people.

"In those last few days, I was swept away by the passion and love I have for my country and my comments were out of place. So, I want to apologize to Messi and the Argentine people," said the Mexican boxer.
