Whether it's ecological impact, workers' rights or individual freedoms, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is fueling many conversations.

But, across the world, spectators do not react in the same way to this competition.

Boycott or no boycott… what are their reactions?

Nationalities with strong opinions

Few countries are against this World Cup, especially Denmark, as Danish sports journalist Nicolai Lisberg explains: “Here, the World Cup embodies everything that is wrong with modern football.

That a country like Qatar, which does not respect basic human rights, should be allowed to host one of the biggest sporting events on the planet is outrageous”.

But most nations focus more on the sporting aspect of the event than on the issues it raises.

“In Argentina, the World Cup goes beyond football.

It is something social, cultural.

It's a national cause,” explains Maximiliano Benozzi, journalist at

Clarin

.

He is joined by Juan Diego Villarreal, journalist at

La Nacion

: “In Costa Rica, the World Cup is seen as an opportunity for national football to grow, so that it can distinguish itself on the international scene.

Finally, other countries are not at all interested in this World Cup and its issues: "In Japan, the fervor for this sport is a little down because there are no big stars in Champions League teams abroad.

And with regard to the problems of the organization in Qatar, the Japanese separate sport and current events, sociology”, concludes Florent Dabadie, commentator of the matches of Japan for the Japanese television.
