Only once before the Qatar World Cup had the home team failed to advance from the group stage.

It was South Africa that had the dubious pleasure of holding that record.

But then they still managed to get a point, via a cross against Mexico in the opening match.

Third straight zero points for Qatar

But now another team has taken over the listing as the worst home team in a World Cup.

When Qatar lost 0-2 against the Netherlands today, it was the Qataris' third straight loss - and as the first home team in the 92-year history of the World Cup, they leave the tournament without a single point.

The Netherlands were clearly the better team, although the match did not contain any extreme cavalcade of chances.

Gapko's third WC goal

But after 26 minutes it was 1-0 anyway, after a classy finish that went in near the right post by 23-year-old PSV player Cody Gapko.

It was Gapko's third WC goal, and with the goal he became the first Dutchman to score in his first three WC matches.

Can face teams from group B

It was 2-0 four minutes into the second half, as Frenkie de Jong capitalized on a goalkeeper rebound.

After that it was more or less decided, and the second half was mostly a long wait for the final signal.

Qatar came up in some counterattacks, mainly through Akram Afif on the left wing.

But the Netherlands' victory was never seriously threatened, and they can now charge for a round of 16 spot.

There awaits the runner-up in group B, which will be decided this evening.
