Mexican boxer Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has threatened Lionel Messi after a video emerged on social media showing the Argentinian player who Alvarez claims stomps on Mexico's jersey after Argentina won 2-0 in the World Cup in Qatar.

“Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our shirt and our flag?

asks Alvarez on his Twitter account.

"He better ask God that I don't cross his path!"

“Adds the 32-year-old boxer, world champion in four categories and very popular in his country.

The Argentine captain had apparently swapped his jersey with that of captain and midfielder Andrés Guardado, replaced before the end of the match lost by the Mexicans.

"Canelo, you don't know anything about football"

The boxer's exit sparked mixed responses, with some netizens defending Messi's attitude and explaining that it's normal to see a football shirt on the floor after a game, before all the shirts go to the machine to be washed.

Former Argentina international striker Sergio 'Kun' Aguero also defended his compatriot on Twitter: "Mr. Canelo, don't look for excuses or problems, you probably don't know enough about football and what can happen. go into the locker room."
