This Tuesday, Iran and the United States will challenge each other in a duel of high sporting and symbolic value, with a possible qualification for the 8th round of the World Cup at stake. And the tension is rising, two days before this match of the group B between Team Melli (2nd with 3 points behind England, 4) and Team USA (3rd with 2 points).

The Iranian Federation protested this Sunday against the American Federation's removal of the Allah sign from the Iranian flag.

"The Iranian Football Federation has sent an email to FIFA demanding that it sends a serious warning to the American Federation," the official Irna agency said.

“In an unprofessional act, the US Soccer Federation Instagram page removed the Allah symbol from the Iranian flag.

The flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran is composed of three colors green, white and red with in the center a stylized form of the word Allah.

This word was removed from the flag on an Instagram page of the federation.

This drawing was used by the American Federation "to show solidarity with women in Iran" and "in this case only", said a communication official.

"The flag has never changed on the federation website," he said.

More tense than during the 1998 World Cup

Iran and the United States marked memories during the 1998 World Cup with scenes of brotherhood between the players of the two countries, even though they have not had diplomatic relations since 1980, a few months after the hostage taking of the American Embassy in Tehran in November 1979.

The incident comes at a time when Iran is the scene of a protest movement sparked on September 16 by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died after her arrest by the morality police in Tehran.
