  • Winner The Kia EV6 is the Car of the Year in Europe 2022

Of the 27 cars that made up the first selection, only the seven finalists of the so-called 'short list' remain.

The Car of the Year award in Europe, which has been awarded since 1964, is entering its final stretch.

The next stop is the joint test of the seven cars, on the road and circuit, and the winner will be announced

on January 13, at the Brussels Motor Show.

The Belgian appointment takes over from the Geneva Motor Show, which is no longer held as such in the Swiss city and until now had hosted the event.

But here you can already vote for your candidate.

In 2022, the Kia EV6 that won this prestigious award.

It is a 100% electric model, technology that was in the majority last year, since it was the only one available in six of the seven candidates.

This year, the offer is much more diverse, with a nuance.

There is not a single one of the cars that offers diesel versions, an alternative that each time has less weight in sales.

Below, we offer a description of each of the applicants, arranged in strict alphabetical order:

jeep avenger

jeep avenger

Within the electric wave that Jeep is preparing, the Avenger is its first model.

Also the first with this technology for Europe, where it has been designed and will be manufactured.

It is

a 4.1-meter long SUV, which is placed below the Renegade and has a 380-liter trunk.

It is manufactured on the Stellantis CMP platform and has a 156 HP motor, plus a 54 kWh battery that allow it to homologate a

range of almost 400 km.

The charging speed reaches 100 kWh.

However, at least during the first years, in Spain it will also be marketed with a 100 hp gasoline engine.

Prices start at 25,900 euros in this case, while the battery-powered variant stands at 39,500 euros without aid in its launch version.

For now, it can only be front-wheel drive, although in the future the electric Avenger will have a 4x4 version.

Kia Niro

KIA NIRO

Kia's second best-selling model in Spain maintains the formula that has given it so much success.

Namely: hybrid versions, PHEV (plug-in hybrid) or 100% electric.

In all other aspects, this new generation represents a significant improvement.

Thus, the proportions change (it grows to 4.42 meters and is also wider), it debuts a more striking exterior design and the dashboard with two large 10.25-inch screens

already known in the EV6 and new Sportage.

The trunk occupies between the 348 liters of the PHEV and the 475 of the electric one.

As for the mechanics, the hybrid maintains 141 CV and the PHEV (with an electric autonomy of 65 km) rises to 183 CV.

100% electric delivers 204 and has a 64.8 kWh battery, to cover 460 km between recharges.

And you can supply the energy from your batteries to other cars or connect different devices to it.

Prices start at 24,400, 27,600 and 32,200 euros, counting promotion, financing and Moves III, if applicable.

nissan ariya

NISSAN ARIYA

Based on the CFM-EV platform of the Renault-Nissan alliance, the

Ariya SUV, 100% electric, measures 4.60 meters.

It is a competitor to models like the VW ID.

4 or the Hyundai Ioniq 5. with a slightly higher body that translates into greater visibility and better access to the interior.

This is especially spacious and has the usual digital screens (12.3 inches) and its own details such as the central console, electrically movable. The trunk only holds 400 liters.

Nissan proposes it with two batteries, 63 or 87 kWh, associated with 214 and 238 hp engines, currently with two drive wheels.

To them will be added the version with two motors, a battery of 87 kW, 300 CV and all-wheel drive.

The autonomy ranges between 267 and 533 km, depending on versions.

Prices range between

47,900 and 60,900 euros without aid or discounts.

Peugeot 408

PEUGEOT 408

It is a saloon 4.69 meters long, differential in itself as it can be a Cupra Formentor, a Citroen C5-X or the coupe body of the Renault Austral.

Attractive from any angle, the rear is the part that gives the most play due to design and habitability, although access can be improved due to the drop in the roof.

It is a specially cared body in the aerodynamic part and houses a trunk that goes from 414 to 513 liters, depending on whether it is one of the hybrid variants (180 or 225 CV) or the 130 CV gasoline.

There is no diesel and by 2024 a 100% electric is expected to appear.

The dashboard is the same one that premiered the current generation of the 308.

Already on sale, gasoline starts at 33,350 euros, for the 41,350 euros that -without public aid- requires the PHEV as a minimum.

All 408s are automatic, and dynamics are one of their strengths.

renault austral

RENAULT AUSTRAL

Built on a brand new platform, the Austral has a good size (4.51 meters) and tricks like the 16 cm sliding rear bench.

That means more space, a lot, for the legs of the rear occupants;

or have a trunk of between 430 and 575 liters.

There are only hybrid mechanics.

Of light type, with 140 or 160 CV.

Or

full hybrid

, with 160 CV (for sale in 2023) or 200 CV, which benefit from significant improvements.

The 200 hp version only emits 102 grams of CO2 per kilometer and with a real average consumption between 5.5 and six liters, it touches 1,000 km with a tank.

Like a diesel.

The interior stands out for

the two large screens in the shape of an inverted L, linked to Google and all its assistants.

The thing does not stop there: we can add steered wheels on the rear axle, the new Esprit Alpine sports finish and up to 32 ADAS driving aids.

This is the case of the top-of-the-range version, which costs more than 46,300 euros.

But there is already

an Austral from 30,900 euros.

On the left, the Subaru Solterra.

On the right, the Toyota bZ4x.

SUBARU SOLTERRA/TOYOTA BZ4X

They are, essentially, the same 100% electric car, although with small differences such as the fact that the Subaru has a set-up that enhances its off-road facet;

and the Toyota offers, as an option, a steering wheel in the style of a formula 1 (or the one that Tesla has developed) and that turns much more directly.

With SUV format, the length is 4.69 meters and it has a very long wheelbase, up to 16 cm more than a Toyota Rav4,

so they offer great legroom.

The luggage compartment suffers: it covers 452 liters.

In the Toyota, there are

variants of front-wheel drive (204 CV) or total (218 CV) In the Solterra, only the second.

The battery is always 71.4 kWh and will retain 70% of its capacity after one million kilometers.

Charging in alternating current up to 11 kW and in direct current, at 150. In the most efficient, the autonomy is 516 km in the mixed cycle, a figure that drops to 466 km in the Subaru, for which there is still no price.

The Toyota cannot be bought, only accessed through a renting with a monthly fee of 599 euros.

VW ID.

buzz

VOLKSWAGEN ID BUZZ

The heiress of the famous Bulli made famous by the hippies of the 60s of the last century returns only as electric.

With a size of

4.71 meters long, 1.99 wide and 1.94 high, it is the most capable and versatile VW in the ID family.

It has nice, aerodynamic shapes, with a 2.99m wheelbase that provides plenty of space for five passengers.

Although it is a pity that the second row of seats, with reclining backrests and a sliding bench, does not offer three true independent seats.

With a net 77 kWh battery and an electric motor permanently associated with the rear axle, it delivers a power of 204 hp, although the maximum speed is limited to 145 km/h.

Volkswagen promises an electricity consumption of around 21 kWh/100 km and a range of 418 km (414 in the Cargo).

The passenger version starts at 61,480 euros, for the 56,140 euros of the professional.

60 journalists from 23 countries

The winner among these models will come from the voting of 60 journalists from 23 countries.

Of them, six Spaniards and one, on behalf of Unidad Editorial/El Mundo.

Each one must distribute 25 points among the seven finalists, with a maximum score for their favorite of 10 points and may also assign zeros.

In any case, he must reason each vote, attending to different criteria, among which innovation at affordable prices stands out.
