In the 84th minute, Frenkie de Jong hit a deep cross.

Cody Gakpo ran to a gap and won the duel with the threatening goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and headed in 1-0.

The players then ran out to the corner flag to celebrate the first goal in the first World Cup since the 2014 World Cup final.

In the ninth extra minute, substitute Davy Klaassen sent in 2-0 on a rebound after a quick conversion.

He found the left cross nicely.

Strömberg: "Advancement for the Netherlands"

- It was an even match, but if there is any team that should win, it is the Netherlands.

The victory basically means advancement for the Netherlands, says SVT Sports expert Glenn Strömberg.

Other teams in Group A are Ecuador and Qatar.

The Dutch had most of the chances in the first half.

The closest was Frenkie de Jong who was freed on the left side of the penalty area but lost the position after not being decisive enough.

van Dijk immediately nodded over

At the start of the second half, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk jumped very high after a corner but was unable to keep the ball down as it skimmed just over the bar and the Netherlands were unable to break the deadlock.

Midway through the second half at the Al Thumama Stadium, Senegal's Boulaye Dia fired a quick shot but Andries Noppert, making his debut on the international stage with the Dutch national team, was down at his left post and covered the ball for a corner.

Moments later, Idrissa Gueye fired a hard shot but it was straight at Noppert, who was able to parry the ball out.

Senegal were without their big star from Bayern Munich, Sadio Mané, who misses the championship due to injury.
