Liverpool FC made it through to the next round in the English League Cup, mainly thanks to the saves of their substitute keeper Caoimhín Kelleher.

With a B-XI, the Reds won 3-2 on penalties against third-tier side Derby County at Anfield after the game had remained goalless for 90 minutes.

Since there is no overtime in the League Cup, the play-off followed immediately after regular time.

Kelleher saved three penalties for the hosts on Wednesday evening.

He blocked shots from Conor Hourihane, Craig Forsyth and Lewis Dobbin.

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino also forgave, he shot the ball over the goal from the point.

In addition, Derby goalkeeper James Collins saved the first penalty for Liverpool from Stefan Bajcetic.

Harvey Elliott finally converted the decisive shot to victory for the Reds.

Unlike last year's League Cup final against Chelsea (11:10 on penalties), Kelleher at least didn't have to convert the decisive penalty himself.

He failed to save a shot back then but became a hero nonetheless, putting the eleventh penalty himself in the net while Chelsea's special substitute goalkeeper Kepa smashed his attempt over the goal – after failing to save a single try either.

Arsenal are defeated by Brighton & Hove

In the third round of the cup, champions Manchester City defeated the troubled Chelsea 2-0 (0-0) without some of their stars.

Riyad Mahrez (53rd minute) and Julian Alvarez (58th) scored for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium, while former Dortmund player Erling Haaland and attacking stars Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden stayed on the bench.

In the Cityzens goal, the former Bielefeld Stefan Ortega convinced with some brilliant deeds.

Premier League leaders FC Arsenal lost 3-1 (1-1) to Brighton & Hove Albion at home without many stars.

After the Gunners initially took the lead through Edward Nketiah (20'), ex-Arsenal pro Danny Welbeck (27'/penalty), Kaoru Mitoma (58') and Tariq Lamptey (71') scored for Brighton.

Coach Mikel Arteta rested Gabriel Jesus, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, among others.

Tottenham Hotspur embarrassed themselves with a majority and with national striker Harry Kane in the starting eleven with 0: 2 (0: 0) at bottom of the league Nottingham Forest.

In contrast to the FA Cup, the League Cup in England is considered rather insignificant and even annoying for some clubs.

That's why many coaches spare their stars and give the youngsters a chance in the cup.

Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp gave many youth players the opportunity to prove themselves, including German U-19 international Melkamu Frauendorf.
