It was a couple of minutes into the second period when the accident happened.

Evander Kane fell on his back after a duel at the rim and shortly after, Tampa player Pat Maroon came by and accidentally hit Kane's outstretched arm with his skate.

Kane quickly got to his feet and screamed in pain on his way out to the booth and locker room.

In his wake, he left a pool of blood on the ice and worried players, managers and spectators.

Later in the game, Edmonton announced that Kane had been taken to hospital and stabilized pending surgery.

- It was definitely scary.

You could feel how all the energy was being sucked out of the rink.

We are thinking of him.

We've heard that he seems to be fine, but it's only initially, Connor McDavid told the AP after the game.

On these occasions, concerns spread to both sides of the ice.

- It was hard to see.

Hopefully he is doing well.

Hockey is a war but we're all still a family, Tampa coach Jon Cooper told the AP after the game.

Edmonton won the tough away game

When this happened, Edmonton had just taken a 2-1 lead after a goal by superstar McDavid.

Shortly after Kane's injury, Edmonton expanded on the power play through Leon Draisatl.

Tampa cut back through Alex Killorn in the third period, but never got closer than 2-3.
