Rebeca Andrade made a special triumph at the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool.

The 23-year-old from Rio de Janeiro was the first Brazilian to win the all-around crown on Thursday in the M&S Bank Arena in the British port city.

In the final of the 24 best starters, the Olympic silver medalist with her start-finish victory with 56.899 points relegated the American Shilese Jones (55.399) and local hero Jessica Gadirova (55.199) from Great Britain to the other podium places.

The only German starter in this decision, Karina Schönmaier from Bremen, ended up in 22nd place with 49.431 points.

For the student, this meant success.

The 17-year-old only found out about her assignment in the morning.

After qualifying on Sunday, the World Cup debutant was the second substitute.

But due to several failures, she moved up to the field of finalists at short notice.

In front of almost 8000 spectators in the stands, Schönmaier was the first to use the balance beam, keeping her nerves under control and otherwise showing a decent competition without falls or relegations.

"I was very nervous, I was really afraid to be the first gymnast to go onto the beam and I was shaking a lot," said Schönmaier.

"But I'm super proud of myself that I did everything well and got through most of the competition without making any mistakes."

With the day's highest score of 15.166 points, Andrade, her country's flag bearer at the 2021 Games in Tokyo, put in a powerful performance in the first round on the vault.

The lead in the intermediate classification was so comfortable that the competitors couldn't keep up.

The South American struggled with a few problems on the uneven bars.

However, this did not push her from the front of the field.
