Börje Salming has been ill with ALS for some time.
The course of the disease progresses quickly and the 71-year-old can no longer speak or eat by himself.
The support from ice hockey Sweden has been great since the announcement came.
In round 21 (Salming's classic jersey number) of the SHL, hockey allsvenskan and SDHL, people will now show their support for Salming.
- We look forward to together drawing attention to the research need for ALS and drawing attention to an individual whose efforts for Swedish ice hockey are unparalleled, says SHL CEO Jenny Silfverstrand.
They will organize more different activities and collect money for Salming's ALS foundation.
- If you want to talk about individuals who have meant a lot to Swedish ice hockey, Börje Salming is one of the very first, so it feels natural for us to support someone who has done so much for the sport we all love, says SDHL's commercial manager Angelica Lindeberg.
Swedish icon Nicklas Lidström has also agreed to lead the new ALS foundation in Salming's name.
- He is such a caring and warm person, so I wanted to give back, he says in Nyhetsmorgon on TV4.
