In the past week, a number of signs were set in relation to sport: Spain and Portugal brought Ukraine on board in their bid for the 2030 World Cup, as a signal of solidarity with the war-torn country and the unity of European football.

The largest cities in France are boycotting public viewing during the upcoming winter football World Cup because of human rights violations and the treatment of guest workers in Qatar.

The 2024 Olympic marathon in Paris will be run where thousands of women protested against the greedy upper class and for more rights during the French Revolution in 1789.

Some may dismiss all this as simple symbolic politics, which is cheap and brings little more than a clear conscience to those who set the sign.

According to the motto: What do the Russian warmongers, the Qatari sheikhs and the chauvinists of this world care about a few well-intentioned gestures.

Of course, symbols alone are not enough to make the world a better place.

But even the smallest thorn pricks the flesh of the mighty.

So keep teasing.
