Within weeks, Hans Niemann became one of the most famous chess players in the world, for very unenviable reasons.

Accused of cheating, the young 19-year-old American reacted this Thursday at a press conference, after a victory in the United States championship.

According to him, the game he had just won “speaks for itself and showed the chess player that I am”.

"It also showed that I will not back down and that I will play my best failures here, whatever the pressure I am under," added the current 38th in the world, author of a phenomenal progression in recent months.

On Tuesday, chess.com, the world's leading Internet chess platform, claimed in a 72-page report that Niemann "probably cheated more than 100 times" online.

Chess.com banned Niemann as early as September 5, shortly after the first charges were brought against the Californian.

The day before, he had beaten world champion Magnus Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup in the United States.

The Norwegian then made the decision to withdraw from the tournament, accusing his young opponent of cheating after finding that his "game", his "behaviour" and his "explanations" were "weird".

The Magnus Carlsen Accusations

On September 19, Carlsen had thrown in the towel after a single blow, during an online meeting against the same Niemann.

A week later, the world No. 1 openly accused the American of cheating in a statement posted on Twitter.

In addition to the games on the Internet, the suspicions of chess.com also concern those face-to-face, but without decisive proof.

While he has admitted cheating on chess.com in the past when he was between 12 and 16 years old, Niemann denies the most recent accusations, saying he is "ready to play naked" if necessary.

The International Chess Federation (Fide) announced on September 29 the opening of an investigation into these accusations of cheating.
