Hellberg, the WC gold medalist with Tre Kronor in 2018 and who last year split the season with games in the KHL and Detroit, was placed on waivers by Seattle and then the Canadian club took the opportunity to sign the Swede.
With Cam Talbot injured, it thus looks like Ottawa will start the season with a Swedish goalie pair: Hellberg and Anton Forsberg.
Ottawa opens the NHL season with two road games: Buffalo on October 13 and Toronto two days later.
