The city of Paris will not broadcast any match of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on giant screens.
The capital joins a long list of municipalities that have made similar arrangements.
A boycott motivated, among other things, by the treatment of workers during the construction of stadiums.
The city of Paris will not install fan zones or giant screens in public space to broadcast the matches of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (November 20 - December 18), announced Monday to AFP l assistant in charge of Sport, Pierre Rabadan.
"For us, there was no question of setting up match broadcast areas for several reasons: the first is the conditions for organizing this World Cup, both in terms of the environment and the social aspect, the second, it is the temporality, the fact that it takes place in the month of December”, he explained.
"Human and environmental disaster"
Marseille, Bordeaux, Nancy and Reims joined the list of French cities on Monday refusing for humanitarian and environmental reasons to promote World Cup matches in Qatar, after Strasbourg, Lille or Rodez.
The socialist mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan described the competition as a "human and environmental disaster" while the mayor of Lille Martine Aubry (PS) denounced on Saturday a "nonsense with regard to human rights, the environment and sport ".

Among the reasons for this boycott include the treatment of immigrant workers and the number of deaths in the construction of the eight stadiums of the World Cup.
50 workers died
While the official toll is only three dead, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported in a report that 50 workers died in workplace accidents in Qatar in 2020, and 500 were seriously injured, a figure that could be higher according to her due to shortcomings in the accident recording system.
"All these reasons make us say that it is a model of major events that we do not want to see continue and which goes against what we want to organize in Paris", added Pierre Rabadan.
