A 36-year-old runner in the London Marathon has died after collapsing during Sunday's long-distance run.

As the organizer London Marathon Events announced on Monday, the man collapsed after a distance of about 37 kilometers.

The marathon covers a good 42 kilometers.

The man received immediate medical treatment and an ambulance was on site within three minutes, the statement said.

However, he later died in hospital.

The cause of death initially remained unclear.

Kenyan Amos Kipruto won the race.

The 30-year-old, third in the 2019 World Cup, beat Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase and Belgian Bashir Abdi in 2:04:39.

Kipruto went to the British capital for the first time on the 42.195 km route.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw from Ethiopia won the women's race in 2:17.25 hours.
