Riots: a soccer match leaves 127 dead in Indonesia

At least 127 people were killed yesterday evening when angry fans stormed a soccer field following a match in Malang, east Java, Indonesia, police said. 

"127 people died, including two policemen. 34 people died inside the stadium, while the rest died in hospital," the local police chief said in a statement.

East Java police chief Niko Aventa told reporters that fans of the losing team stormed the pitch and authorities fired tear gas, causing a stampede and suffocation.

Video footage published by local media showed fans streaming into the stadium, along with pictures of body bags.

The Indonesian Super League announced the suspension of the competition for a week after the disaster that occurred during a match between Arima and Persibaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang.
