"127 people died in the incident, including two police officers.

Thirty-four people died inside the stadium and the rest died in hospital," police chief Nico Afinta said in a statement after the incident.

The police have since said that two more people lost their lives.

A hospital director told a local television station that one of the dead was only five years old.

It was after a match in the country's top division Liga 1 between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya that violence broke out.

The home team Arema lost 2–3 and disgruntled supporters stormed the pitch after the final whistle, writes the Indonesian football association PSSI on its website.

The stadium holds 42,000 spectators and is said to have been sold out.

According to the police, there were around 3,000 people who stormed the pitch.

Police have described the events as riots and used tear gas to try to disperse the thousands of people who stormed the pitch.

Many of the dead were trampled to death according to the police.

"We have suspended all play in Liga 1 for a week.

In addition to that, Arema FC cannot host any more matches for the rest of this season,'' says the PSSI president Mochamad Iriawan in a statement.

The Indonesian government regrets what happened and says that the incident will be investigated.
