The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will not take place in Guinea as planned.

The African Football Association Caf withdrew the West African country's role as host, citing a lack of infrastructure as the reason.

The country is not ready to host a world-class event like the Africa Cup, the association said in a statement.

The association's executive committee will discuss the details of the tournament's reallocation at its meeting in Algiers, Algeria this Saturday.

Association President Patrice Motsepe traveled to Guinea to inform the country of the decision and to assure support in setting up suitable infrastructure and the necessary facilities for a tournament.

In September 2021, a military junta led by junta chief Mamady Doumbouya took control of Guinea.

Most recently, the Caf had already decided to postpone the Africa Cup in Ivory Coast, which was planned for summer 2023, to early 2024 due to the rainy season there.

In recent years there have been repeated changes in the host countries and times for hosting the tournament.

The Africa Cup takes place every two years, but was recently postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The last edition in early 2022, Senegal won the title with the current Bayern professional Sadio Mané.
