• Reform The new regulations and fines of the DGT that are already in force

  • Traffic controversy denies that there are 300,000 students waiting to get their card

When the reform of the Traffic Law came into force at the end of March, one of the big changes referred to the use of the mobile: just carrying it in your hand is already punishable, just like talking on the phone without hands-free or manipulating it;

and they have gone from losing six points, for the three before.

Instead, the DGT refused to raise the amount of the associated fine, which remains at 200 euros.

A questionable decision, since many drivers are more afraid of having their wallets touched.

The results of the latest distraction control campaign, carried out between the 7th and 13th of this month, seem to confirm that impression.

Drivers are reluctant to stop using mobile phones at the wheel.

Of the 6,854 sanctions imposed by the agents, 2,300 were for this reason.

That represents 33.6% of the total.

In the campaign, which also included the participation of some local police officers, 414,695 vehicles were controlled;

8,199 controls were carried out and 6,823 drivers were reported.

After the cell phone, the most numerous distractions refer to

putting on the seat belt while driving, generally when they have been seen by the agents, with 581 fines.

Next comes the use of helmets or headphones

connected to sound-reproducing devices other than mobile phones (337 drivers),

reading behind the wheel

(207), looking for objects (98), being distracted by other vehicle occupants (85) or driving eating (66).

In addition to all these specific actions, the agents filed

1,251 complaints for other offenses that caused distracted driving.

Likewise, the preventive controls made it possible to detect and sanction 1,839 drivers who, apart from being distracted, were driving with alcohol levels higher than that allowed or tested positive for other drugs.
