It was in connection with the Nations League gathering in September that Dejan Kulusevski gave his view on youth football in Sweden.

He then explained that he believes that Swedish football should do better at nurturing players with the right mentality.

- You have to want a lot more.

Here (in Sweden) it feels like it's a game, but out in Europe it's not a game, it's life and death.

If you don't get the ball away, the others score.

We really have to step up and make sure that young people get a better chance in the future, he told SVT Sport.

Secretary General Håkan Sjöstrand is of the opinion that a debate about talent development in Sweden is good.

- I think we have talked about it too little.

I welcome it and think it is good that the debate is conducted in different forums.

We need more of that and a greater questioning of that part.

Looking for a wider debate

Are you worried that Sweden has fallen behind in that part?

- You can never be satisfied, we must constantly strive to be better.

There is a soundness in the questioning that arises, then we need to handle it in a good way.

There are a lot of opinions, ultimately it comes down to implementation.

Is this a bigger issue than the men's national team doing worse?

- For me, these are two separate questions.

One might want to conclude that the way talent development looked a number of years ago is a fruit of what it looks like now, but that's a very big and complex question.

We need to debate it more and more often.
