Criticism has showered Henrik Stenson since he signed up for the controversial LIV tour - which is funded by Saudi Arabia.

Last week, the Swedish Golf Association announced that it had chosen to end its collaboration with Stenson.

- Right now we don't think he is suitable as a role model in our junior activities and in our para activities, said the golf association's general secretary Gunnar Håkansson to TT.

"Greatest Swedish golfer"

The reasoning does not sit well with English golf profiler Ian Poulter.

The 46-year-old – who he also signed for the LIV tour – takes Stenson in defense.

"He is the greatest Swedish golfer ever," writes Poulter on Twitter, listing Stenson's greatest achievements.

"Extremely disappointed"

He is also critical of the Swedish Golf Association's decision.

"I am extremely disappointed by the news.

I really hope the juniors and para golfers speak up.

I hope you will regret this SGF (Swedish Golf Association)".

Poulter has five victories on the PGA Tour in his career and has mainly made a name for himself through his charismatic efforts for Europe in the Ryder Cup.
