The 266.9 km race ended up being a battle between Remco Evenepoel and Alexey Lutsenko.

But the latter could not hold on. When there were then 18 km left, Evenepoel was alone in the lead by over a minute.

The 22-year-old, who only a few weeks ago cycled home the Vuelta a España, was able to cross the finish line in solitary majesty by a good margin.

In the end, two minutes and 21 seconds separated second place Christophe Laporte.

The bronze went to home skater Michael Matthews from Australia.

Swedish participation

Tobias Ludvigsson had a tough time.

With just over nine miles to go, he had a problem with the bike and had to stop for service.

The 31-year-old lost valuable time and ended up abandoning the race.
