In response to calls for his dismissal .. Southgate: I am the best suited to lead England in the World Cup

England manager Gareth Southgate, under pressure after a frustrating Nations League campaign, has called himself "the right person" to lead the national team at this year's World Cup in Qatar.

England were relegated to the second tier of the Nations League after five matches without a victory, and the series includes two defeats from Hungary, one of them 4-0 at Wembley and another loss from Italy, along with two draws.

Fans turned on Southgate after losing 4-0 to Hungary last June and he was also booed by the visiting fans as he applauded them after Italy's 1-0 defeat in Milan yesterday.

"I think I am the right person to lead the team into the tournament," Southgate said in response to calls for his dismissal.

"I think this guarantees more stability without a doubt, I don't think the performance (against Italy) was bad and I know I will be laughed at by the series of defeats," he added.

Southgate believes that the experience gained from facing first-tier opponents in the Nations League will help him overcome the challenges of the World Cup, which begins on November 20.

"The young players in particular who have played in these matches have learned a lot and we know we will improve."

England captain Harry Kane said he understood the fans' frustration but stressed there was no need to panic.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker added: "We will not panic and realize that we want to improve. I was an England fan and I still understand that. We will have an assessment of what will happen in November and if we succeed in the World Cup I am not sure how busy the public will be in this period before the summer." England will play at home against Germany on Monday.
